PUI-PT CPHI Udayana University Conducts FGD on Asset Optimization and Business Model Development for Wolbachia Facility

Denpasar — The Center for Public Health Innovation (CPHI) at Udayana University conducted a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Asset Optimization and Business Model Development for the Wolbachia Facility Boot Camp GROW 2026 on Monday, 4 May 2026, at Four Star Hotel, Denpasar. The activity was part of efforts to strengthen the sustainability of the Wolbachia facility through asset optimization, service development, and the formulation of a business model that supports long-term operational and funding sustainability within CPHI Udayana University.

The event began with an opening session and introduction by the CPHI team, followed by a report from the organizing committee chair, Dr. Sang Gede Purnama, S.KM., M.Sc., who also presented the current condition of the Wolbachia facility and assets. The presentation highlighted the potential utilization of the facility, sustainability challenges, as well as opportunities for future service development and collaboration.

The session continued with remarks from the Head of CPHI Udayana University, Prof. dr. Pande Putu Januraga, M.Kes., DrPH., who emphasized the importance of strengthening the downstream utilization of public health innovation through sustainable management of research assets and facilities. He also highlighted the need to develop adaptive management models so that the Wolbachia facility can continue to grow as a center for innovation, research, and public health services.

The event was officially opened by the Head of the Institute for Research and Community Service (LPPM) Udayana University, Prof. Dr. drh. I Nyoman Suartha, M.Si. In his remarks, he expressed support for the development of the Wolbachia facility as part of strengthening research and innovation at Udayana University, while encouraging the optimization of research asset utilization to generate broader benefits for both the institution and society.

The FGD was organized in response to the need for sustainability strategies following the conclusion of external program support, as well as to maximize the use of Wolbachia facilities and assets developed through previous collaborations. In addition to serving as research infrastructure, the Wolbachia facility also holds significant potential as a platform for service development, technical support, and research- and technology-based product innovation in public health.

During the subsequent sessions, participants explored various strategic aspects, including asset classification and mapping, identification of opportunities for research, production, and service utilization, as well as commercialization and partnership potential. Participants also discussed service model development, human resource and facility requirements, and the preparation of initial business plan components to support future development and funding opportunities.

Operational readiness and biosafety aspects were also key discussion points. The sessions addressed the need to develop and adjust standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure that facility utilization remains aligned with safety principles and applicable regulations. This is expected to support the sustainable, productive, and responsible operation of the facility.

The FGD is expected to serve as an initial step in formulating strategic directions for the future development of the Wolbachia facility at Udayana University. The outcomes of the discussion will provide the foundation for further documents and initiatives, including business plans, operational system strengthening, and strategies for service and partnership development in the future.
