Workshop on the Development of the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) at Udayana University Hospital: A Collaboration between PUI-PT CPHI and Udayana University Hospital to Strengthen the Clinical Research Ecosystem

Denpasar, September 26, 2025 — Udayana University Hospital (RS Unud), in collaboration with the PUI-PT Center for Public Health Innovation (CPHI) of Udayana University, held a workshop on strengthening the Clinical Research Unit (CRU) as an open forum to gather strategic input for the development of RS Unud’s CRU. The event marked a step forward in building a competitive and sustainable clinical research ecosystem.

The workshop was attended by the hospital leadership, representatives from the medical staff group, research groups from the Faculty of Medicine, lecturers and researchers from FK Unud, and external partners. It aimed to socialize the vision and roadmap of RS Unud’s CRU, collect strategic feedback, and identify potential collaborations to improve the quality and impact of clinical research both nationally and internationally.

The event was officially opened by Prof. Dr. dr. Anak Agung Wiradewi Lestari, Sp.PK, Subsp.BDKT(K), Subsp.KV(K), Director of Udayana University Hospital. In her opening remarks, she emphasized the importance of CRUs as research centers capable of addressing public health challenges through needs-based local research. The CRU is also expected to serve as a collaborative hub connecting hospitals, academic institutions, and cross-sectoral research partners.

The main session began with a presentation by Prof. dr. Jarir At Thobari, D.Pharm., Ph.D., on managing CRUs in teaching hospitals in Indonesia. This was followed by a presentation from Dr. dr. Dewa Putu Wisnu Wardhana, Sp.BS(K), FINSS, FICS, outlining the vision and roadmap of the CRU at RS Unud. Additional insights were shared by dr. Ida Ayu Sri Wijayanti, Sp.S(K), and Dr. dr. Luh Oliva Saraswati Suastika, Sp.JP(K), who presented their experiences and lessons learned from CRU development both nationally and globally.

A panel discussion titled "Developing Clinical Research Networks in Teaching Hospitals" followed, moderated by Dr. dr. Ni Made Susilawathi, Sp.S(K). The panel featured Prof. dr. Pande Putu Januraga, M.Kes, DrPH, Prof. Dr. dr. Ni Nyoman Sri Budayanti, Sp.MK(K), and Dr. dr. Agung Wiwiek Indrayani, S.Ked, M.Kes. The discussion was lively and produced several strategic recommendations to strengthen RS Unud’s CRU as a leading center for clinical research.

In conclusion, the workshop reaffirmed the importance of building a collaborative and sustainable clinical research ecosystem. The partnership between RS Unud’s CRU, PUI-PT CPHI, and cross-sectoral support serves as the foundation for ensuring the development of research that meets public needs. Particularly in the implementation of clinical trials, strong institutional capacity and collaborative networks are essential to achieving meaningful impact in improving health services and outcomes.
